What are rashes?

Rashes are symptoms of an underlying medical condition that affects the skin. With a rash, your skin becomes red, swollen, and irritated. You may also develop blisters or areas of raw, tender skin.

In some cases, rashes develop quickly, but in others they occur slowly over time. Sometimes rashes tend to clear up quickly, but for some people, they can turn into a more chronic condition.

What causes rashes?

Many medical conditions may result in a rash. Some of the most common causes include:

Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a type of rash that occurs when your skin comes in contact with an irritant or allergen. Poison ivy, for example, causes a red, itchy rash.

Eczema includes skin conditions that cause skin irritation and inflammation. Contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and dyshidrotic eczema are types of eczema.

Rosacea causes skin inflammation and irritation on the face, usually affecting the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead.

Allergic reaction

You may also develop a rash from an allergic reaction to a food or drug.

Certain infections cause rashes, such as chickenpox, shingles, and ringworm.

What can I expect when I come in with a rash?

You can expect a thorough exam when you come in to see the skin care experts at Dermatology Consultants P.A. to get answers about your rash. The goal of your evaluation is to identify the underlying cause of your rash.

During your exam, your provider reviews your medical and family history and then examines your skin. Lab work may be requested to determine if allergies are the cause of your rash. Your provider may also perform a skin biopsy to confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis.

How are rashed treated?

Your provider at Dermatology Consultants P.A. develops a personalized treatment plan for your rash based on the underlying cause. Treatment may include identifying your rash triggers and developing strategies to help you avoid them.

Your skin specialist may also provide specific recommendations based on the type and cause of your rash. Medications therapy may also be recommended to ease your symptoms or treat a flare-up.

Rashes can develop from many causes and may resolve on their own without the need for medical intervention. However, if your rash isn’t improving, occurs frequently, or is affecting your quality of life, contact Dermatology Consultants P.A. by phone or online to schedule an evaluation today.
