Mohs Surgery

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery, named after Frederick Mohs, is the most effective technique available for treating skin cancer. The skin care experts at Dermatology Consultants P.A. perform Mohs surgery as an outpatient procedure.

During the procedure, the dermatologic surgeon removes the entire cancerous lesion without damaging any of the surrounding healthy tissue.

When is Mohs surgery appropriate?

Dermatology Consultants P.A. specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. When you come in with concerns about an abnormal skin growth, they conduct a comprehensive evaluation and determine the best course of action.

They recommend Mohs surgery for removal of:

  • Large skin cancer lesions
  • Skin cancer in hard-to-reach places
  • Recurrent skin cancer

Mohs surgery is also appropriate when the skin cancer occurs in areas where skin preservation is essential, such as the tissue surrounding the eyes and nose.

Dermatology Consultants P.A. performs Mohs surgery to remove basal and squamous cell carcinoma. It may also be used for the removal of melanoma, a more serious type of skin cancer.

What happens during Mohs surgery?

Your provider reviews the details of your Mohs surgery at your skin consultation so you know how to prepare and what to expect.

During your surgery, the dermatologic surgeon removes one thin layer of cancerous tissue at a time and examines each layer of tissue. These steps are repeated until all the cancerous tissue is removed.

The entire procedure may take a few hours. Dermatology Consultants P.A. uses a local anesthetic during Mohs surgery to minimize discomfort.

After your Mohs surgery, you and your dermatologic surgeon decide the best approach for repairing your surgical wound. Options may include:

  • Covering the wound with a bandage and allowing it to heal on its own
  • Closing the wound with stitches
  • Using skin from the surrounding area to cover the wound (skin flap)
  • Taking skin from another part of your body to cover the wound (skin graft)

Mohs surgery for skin cancer has a high cure rate. However, you should schedule regular follow-up appointments so your provider can monitor your skin.
